at 9:30 a.m., a general assembly of the college of cardinals convenes. first order of business, to prepare for the conclave. as soon as the cardinals give the go ahead, the little stove will be installed to communicate the results. black smoke means no pope, white smoke for a new pope. while those preparations are taking place, the cardinals will discuss the issues the new pope will face. >> these daily meetings before they go under lock and key theoretically are off-limits. we will be reading tea leaves. >> reporter: we likely won't be told who said what or who spoke. the vatican doesn't want the news media handicapping the race. two cardinals tainted by scandal made public statements. cardinal keith o'brian admitted the truth of a recent british newspaper report he had initially denied. there have been times that my sexual conduct has fallen below standards expected of me as a priest, archbishop and cardinal.

o'brien, who will not be attending the conclave, asked for forgiveness. and roger mahoney gave an interview since the release of thousands of pages of church documents that shows how much he covered up for pedophile priests. he told the catholic news service he is amazed by the controversy, but saying the vatican told him to come to the conclave. david wright, abc news, rome. doctors in atlanta will discuss what may be a remarkable advance in fighting aids and it involves a baby possibly cured. listen to this. doctors in mississippi that child is 2 1/2 years old and requires no medication. the baby was born infected with hiv in mississippi and was given three powerful drugs to fight the virus, after delivery. doctors discovered the mother stopped giving the medicine after a year and after a checkup, there was no sign of hiv in the baby's blood. >> my first thought was to panic. i thought oh, my goodness, i have been treating a child who is not infected.

>> turns out that was not the case. doctors believe the drug combination and timing may have been essential in wiping out hiv in the young child before it had a chance to reproduce. >> fascinating story there. here in new york, a very sad story. a tiny infant beginning his life without parents after they were killed in a hit and run accident. the expectant mother and father were on their way to the hospital when a bmw slammed into their car. both died on impact. doctors managed to deliver their baby boy. he is only 4 pounds. police are still looking for the driver of that bmw who ran from the scene. now to london where queen elizabeth is hospitalized. dehydration is a common complication and her doctors may be giving her liquids intravenously. here's abc's jeffrey kofman. >> reporter: it is a stomach illness that's put the queen in the hospital. a spokesman says it's not serious but the queen is 86 years old. she arrived here not by

ambulance, but by car. her public appearances for most of the next week have been canceled, including a trip to rome. in her six decades as queen, elizabeth ii has spent more time opening hospitals than being admitted to them. she rarely cancels any of the 350 events on her schedule and when she has it is because of a bad cold or back pain. she was last in the hospital in 2003 for knee surgery. her husband, prince phillip, is 91. and understandably a little more frail. last year after this rain-soaked appearance for the queen's 60th jubilee, he was admitted to the hospital with a urinary infection. he had heart surgery in 2011. since then he has scaled back his public appearances, but the queen has not. just last summer at the olympic opening ceremony, she made her appearance with james bond as a escort. it was a body double jumping from the chopper, but she still stole the show. she's now the patient at the

hospital that was the center of a media storm when the duchess of cambridge was admitted for morning sickness. a nurse here committed suicide after answering a phone call. the queen is expected to spend two nights at this hospital. doctors say if she really does just have a stomach virus, she could recover quickly. >> we don't know for sure what it is she has. but there is speculation it might be the norovirus, which is never good. but the queen says she doesn't really want a whole lot of fuss. she doesn't want people to change everything they're doing to come visit her. >> the thing with the norovirus, you get so dehydrated. the hospital stay is you can stay on an iv and stay hydrated. not supposed to be too serious. >> she'll be all right. now on to this. the obama administration is distancing itself from former nba star dennis rodman's first foray into international politics.

he's back from his trip to north korea where he met with kim jung-un. on abc's "this week" with george stephanopoulos yesterday rodman talked about his visit during which he watched an exhibition basketball game with kim. >> i stayed with him two days. the one thing he asked me, he want obama to do one thing, call him. >> he wants a call from president obama? >> that's right. he told me that. >> rodman also called kim a strong but humble man that doesn't want war with the u.s. looks like president obama is trying to do a run around congressional leaders. he is reaching out to individual senators in a bid to force a compromise. taxes dividing on this one. republicans insist there will be no new taxes. democrats refuse to talk about any bargain without increased revenue. those cuts are just one of the challenges facing the president's new budget chief. sylvia burwell expected to be nominated by mr. obama today.

there are some huge changes in store for the golden arches. >> mcdonald's dropping some of the menu items and it could be because of pressure from competitors. abc's linzie janis has the story. >> reporter: could it be we're not really loving all of the items on our mcdonald's menu? the fast food giant is putting foods that have been around for years on the chopping block. the first to get sliced, select chicken strips. fruit and walnut salads are gone, too. and those angus third pounders may also be going the way of the mcblt. the company says it makes decisions about what to add and what to remove from our menu on a case-by-case basis. but the changes come just as the fast food wars are heating up. mcdonald land has gotten used to the hamburgler making off with the food. but lately, burger king and wendy's have been catching up with sales. in january, mcdonald's reported its first monthly sales drop in nine years, just after its competition announced an

going up today. then to the unlikely international political pair. dennis rodman discusses his meeting with north korea's new leader. he brought home a mesage for the obama administration. it's been a challenge keeping up with all the changes on the late night talk show circuit. we'll bring you the scoop in "the skinny." new details from that heartbreaking accident that killed two expectant parents. >> their baby boy is in the hospital expected to survive and police are searching for that hit and run driver. here is lucy yang. >> reporter: what should have been the most joyous of times turned into the most tragic of times. these are the coffins for nathan and his wife. both were 21 and about to become first-time parents. >> just two amazing people, two lovely people.

we lost two lovely people. >> reporter: it was just after midnight, she wasn't feeling well, so they called a cab to take them to the hospital. while trying to make a left hand turn, we're told this gray bmw slammed into the black car service. she went flying. rescue workers found her wig on the road and her lifeless body under this trailer. crews rushed her corpse to the hospital where they delivered her beautiful baby boy, born an orphan on this cold and cruel night. nathan, the father, was pronounced dead at the scene. as for the cab driver who was spared, he told me he doesn't remember a thing. >> i feel very sorry for that beautiful family. >> reporter: detectives report the driver of the bmw and a female passenger fled on foot, leaving a young couple dead and a community dealing with mourning and anger. >> give yourself up. make the pain a little easier. and so police will know you're not a coward. >> reporter: police tell me the

owner of the bmw was not driving the car at the time of the accident. lucy yang, abc news, new york. >> just such a sad, sad story. this happened in an ultraorthodox jewish community. it's a very tight knit community so the grief i guess in some ways hits extra hard. but they have each other to lean on. >> as far as why they were in a cab as opposed to an ambulance. the mom wasn't feeling well, but they didn't think she would go into labor, they were in a cab instead of an ambulance. on so many levels, this story is terrible. the baby was delivered c-section and is right now in serious condition. but we're praying he'll pull through. >> no doubt about that. let's talk about the cardinals of the roman catholic church. they're going to convene this morning they won't be discussing any possible candidates to become the next. instead, they'll talk about the state of the church, including the vatican's scandal. but the issue that must ultimately be decided won't be

far from everyone's mind. >> we're not going to hear any campaign speeches at these meetings. we're going to hear rather subtle hints dropped perhaps about who might be able to lead the church or what qualities we need in a new pope. >> while the cardinals are meeting, workers are preparing the sistine chapel for the papal conclave. a stove is being installed that will communicate the voting results. queen elizabeth wakes up in a british hospital this morning after battling a nasty stomach bug. it's the first time in ten years that the 86-year-old monarch has been sick enough to be hospitalized. her public appearances for most of the week have been canceled, including a trip to rome. the queen went to the hospital in a car, not an ambulance and did not want anyone raising a fuss about it. demolition crews today on that florida home sitting over that sinkhole, swallowed up a man while he slept. that man's body will not be removed, so loved ones said their good-byes before the heavy equipment moved in. abc's gio benitez was there. >> reporter: praying at the

mailbox for a final goodbye. a family prepared for this. the sound of heartbreak. almost 40 years of memories ripped apart. >> i had my eyes closed. i couldn't watch. it was too much. >> reporter: this is the final resting place for 37-year-old jeff bush, who died after his bedroom collapsed into a sinkhole 100 feet deep thursday night. after four days we still can't see the sinkhole, but rescuers who did say it was impossible to get him out. >> i'm sorry they can't get him out. that's the last place he's going to be. >> reporter: the crane stood far back, just in case the ground gave way. the arm carefully grabbing the family's american flag, and precious family photos. then there's the family bible. >> it means god is still in control. and he knew we needed this for closure. >> reporter: officials expect to complete the precarious job today, knowing they're literally on shaky ground.

gio benitez, abc news, florida. >> we hear that expression, freak accident, a lot, but that's got to be one of the freakiest freak accidents ever. >> the brother apparently jumped in that hole to rescue his brother and police found him shoveling dirt out to get to him. and the mattress was halfway in the hole, halfway out, so i'm assuming they thought he was just underneath the surface. and the fact that he couldn't reach his brother has got to be breaking that brother's heart. we heard from him. he said i'm heart broken because i couldn't reach my brother. danica patrick could not follow up her success from the daytona 500. from inside her car, we see her crash into a wall yesterday in a race near phoenix. her right tire blows out, causing her to lose control. she was fine. her car, not so much. carl edwards won that race, his first victory since 2011. after the crash, patrick said she was thankful for the soft walls installed along that nascar track. here's your monday forecast.

but his 4-year-old daughter didn't. she's a little kid. she could get hurt. >> and she was asking them to stop and go away and saying they were too close. she's 4. jay leno, it could be coming down to the end for him. some sources say two high level industry sources have said that nbc is preparing to retire jay leno and move jimmy fallon into that coveted late night spot. nbc denies the claims but the sources say the network is planning a may announcement. it's for the 2013-2014 season and might be the last for jay leno. he's been on for 20 years. jimmy fallon speculated to move into that 11:30 time slot. the idea is they want to attract younger viewers. >> well, listen, i've seen them both and i will say this, as possibly what they consider a younger viewer, i have to say i like jay leno. but jimmy fallon brings a spark to the camera. >> those songs he does are crazy. >> the songs, the skits.

good morning. we start the week with the first step toward the future of the catholic church. it's happening right now right at the vatican. >> cardinals from every corner of the globe have begun their first face-to-face meetings. the big question -- where do they go from here? abc's preeti arla reports. >> reporter: cardinals from around the world gathered in rome today for the first preconclave meeting. they'll begin to assess each other and discuss the hot topics facing the church as they look forward to finding a successor to benedict xvi. catholics are watching for the decision. on sunday, when the pope usually goes to st. peter's square to bless the fateful, the windows remained shut. it is no small task to pick a new pope. >> i would be looking for someone who has that vision and that energy to say, this is what i want to do with this
